PLF Vehicle History

Dads Love It all started back when
Dads 1956
Here is a old picture of me and my older sister standing out in our driveway in Tucson Arizona and in the back ground you can see my dads old 1956 VW Bug. My dad was a huge VW guy back in the day, he used to race up at SIR in Seattle before we came along. He used to build race engines and could always be found working on his VW's. Even when I left home he was still driving around a VW, a 80's Rabbit. Guess you could say I was born into this job.

Dads Love First Bus Experience
Dads Split Screen Panel Bus
I remember when my dad brought this bus home, it had seen it's day. It was a junkyard if I remember well where we lived in California. It was taken there after an engine fire. My dad fixed it back up and got it on the road. I remember he had built a plywood box in the back for a tool stash and had covered it with carpet. I remember on any family outing where we as a family took two cars out I would always insist in riding in the bus with my dad, I would always sit in the back on the carpet covered box. I loved that bus. The day eventually came and not too long after having it we were moved up to Alaska by the Air Force and because the Al-Can was closed that year we had to sell the bus to move. I remember how proud my dad was of that bus and how sad he was to let it go. The picture is of a trip we took to Valleo California to spend Christmas with my Grandmother.

I still own her! My First Car
1961 Rag top Bug
Purchased back around 1987, it was my first car and I had no idea what I was getting into. At that time I could not tell it from a super beetle, but I know I liked it. Within months after purchasing it the tranny went and the engine was sure to go soon. I took it to a local shop in Houston Texas where I lived at the time and they put a 67 bug tranny in it and rebuilt the 40 hp engine that was in it. I drove that bug all over Texas, from Corpus Christie to Lubuc. The car is in much need of some TLC. It is my first car ever and I promised myself that I would never sell it and after all these year I am happy she is still part of the family. Original Color is Pearl white but when I bought it, it was red and pretty much still is. It has added a few colors and stickers over the years.

Sold 1956 Bug
Two years after buying my first car I happened across another cool bug. Thru a friend in the North Houston VW Club I purchased the best running car I have ever owned, now as for the body, chicken wire and bondo is all a different story. This was a classic metallic blue bondo bucket. This was my first experience with a 36hp motor and I really look forward to owning another, it was a dream to drive. A few years after her purchase I parted with here as at the time I had 4 cars and a boyfriend I was getting rid of so he took the 56 and an old panel we had found, not much more than a shell.

No Picture Available The Old Panel Found it up in North Texas, borrowed a tow bar from Jeff Keller in Houston and towed it home with my 1972 Westfalia Camper. Had it until the brake up with the old boyfriend and sent it on its way. Never knew what year it was or much, small back door is about all I member, maybe one day I will find a picture

Sold My First Westfalia
1972 Westfalia SO-42
Back in the day before I became a greasy woman I used to take my bug down to Franks Garage in Spring Texas for repairs. Until this point I had not had very little exposure to buses or camper but knew I wanted one. At this time in Texas you rarely saw a split window driving around so I was pretty happy when I came across this bus sitting at Franks Garage. He Gave me the grand tour and he was sure it would suit me well. I had really wanted a split but never seeing one for sale and seeing all the bells and whistle that came with the one owner bus I was sold. This bus was full of factory options, all the paper work such as window sticker, rebate forms, show room brochure, radio diagrams and more. It had everything from the tent, factory tow hitch and parcel tray. I was pretty happy with it and drove all over Texas in this one too. When I moved up to Seattle Washington I was again at a point when the herd was all unable to come with me. I had another bus (next one down) that was going to be towed behind the rider and the bug (that I promised to keep) was pulled behind the boyfriends mini truck. So the 72 had to go and that it did. I don't know that I would ever own another bay window bus but they will always have a special place in my heard because of her.

Splity Love 1965 SO-44 Westfalia
European Domestic Import
One Day a long time ago in Huntsville Texas I gave a co-worker a ride home and one the way back I spotted this bus sitting along side a house. I stopped in to inquire and the elderly lady there told me to come back and speak with her husband later so I did. After quite a few hours of small chat the owner decided I was right for his bus. His family was the second owner of this bus which they owned from 1970 until I purchased it in 1994. When they purchased it back then the interior was missing. Their son used it while in the service and college around the country. This family bought it from the original owner Hans who still lived in Huntsville at the time of my purchase. Hans a well know VW guy of the area bought the bus when he worked at the VW Factory in Germany and was able to have it special ordered for the States so it is kinda a mix of European and American options. The Bus has the European camper kit SO-44 and locking steering ignition. The bus also came with factory American bumpers and lighting. Over the years I was able to discover what the original kit was and have found a 1965 dated kit. This was my first early Westfalia bus and needed a top when my son was born so I made one and that is where PLF all started. She comes out once in a while to shows but normally stays hiding away from the harsh Arizona sun.

Sold 1967 Sunroof Square Back
A friend in Seattle was having a lot of luck coming upon free squarebacks so I told him I would be up for one if he found one and he did. A few weeks later this one showed up in my driveway and a quick trip to the local junk yard and I had an engine. I owned this vehicle for about a year as a daily driver but you know it just was not as cool as a bus so I posted her to the samba and invested in the green bus below, the first PLF dragbus, much cooler.

Sold 1966 Panel Bus
The first PLF Drag Bus
A friend of mine owned this bus in Seattle Washington. After selling the square back I purchased this bus. Soon after she received her racing stripes and logos ready to represent PLF at the upcoming Vintage meet in 1997. Now here is fun part of the story. This is the first year I ever made a promotional car. Hot wheels dragbuses where the big thing and I wanted to make one to match my company bus but you see at the time the company bus was simply green and I had no idea what I was going to put on it. So looking at the Hot wheels drag bus we designed the racing stripes and logos for it and then painted my real bus to match. Kinda backwards from the norm and a fun trivia fact. License plate read DRAGBUS.

Sold to purchase my first High Roof the next PLF bus.

The original 1966 Panel Bus
The first PLF Drag Bus
Here is the 1997 Promotional Hot wheels Dragbus. Only 46 were ever made. I had a local artist design the back cards. These buses where given out free to customers who met the minimal purchase requirements or purchased the dragbus right out. And just when you were going for that e-mail button to ask PLF a question, yes they are all sold out, no longer in stock.

Sold 1962 SO-34
Parts Bus
Kinda a fun story. After attending Buses and Balloons in 1999 and seeing a friends SO-34 I decided I really wanted one of these. So driving home to Arizona and keeping my eyes peeled for any buses hanging out in old junk yards I did finally see one bus over in the distance. A little closer examination and I could see the flip top. Found the owner and purchased the bus one week later for $50.00. A bit more rusty than I think I will ever deal with putting together but having her here and collecting parts was a good thing as a few years later I purchased the 65 and had everything I needed just about to get it going and loosing good in no time at all.

This bus has been sold to a friend in Missouri

On Safari 1966 Deluxe
The Dragon Ladies old Bus
Thanks to Rick Taylor out in Missouri. My son and I drove out to Missouri in 2000 for a family wedding. While out in the area we all stopped in to visit this guy we heard about that had more buses then anyone else in the area. And that he did. Boy if your know the story it always is the same, they are all so cute one just ends up following you home no mater where you go. And sitting in a barn all nice and safe she was waiting to get out of the rain country and come home to Arizona to enjoy her days. The name Pearl came from the previous owner who was well know as the Dragon Lady in the Renaissance festival screen where she used to go to all festivals and sell dragons. The name kept. She was parked quite a few years ago and restoration work was started and never finished. They removed the top windows and rag top and started sanding her roof down but never did much more. She is in need of a lot of work and she is worth is. She is a great around town kinda bus, good for the kids and lots of friends.

In 2009 Pearl was the star of a local Quest commercial here in Phoenix AZ!

Sold 1961 SO-23
Westfalia
What can I say, it had a 1966/1967 Westfalia internal frame tent, a So-34 spare tire table base and the 1965 SO-44 interior I needed to repair my interior. Mr Rustybus got the bus running and alive again and we parted with her hoping she would find a loving home elsewhere.

Dead! 1966 High Roof
Dragbus 2
In 2001 at the VW classic there was this ambulance high roof that started the ball rolling. I had always wanted a high roof and said the only reason I would ever sell the PLF Dragbus was so that I could move up in the world. Well that June it all started. There was the ambulance that I just did not want as I love the simple lines of the panel and did not want the windows of the ambulance. A friend at the show had just the opposite feelings and had a panel but really wanted a high roof ambulance. We bought the ambulance and traded for the friends panel. A few months later at the Colorado show Mr Rustybus picked up the new addition to the family and drover her home. The next year she was painted her inherited color and racing stripes in time to make it to the VW Classic the next year. After the show my son and I took a 10,000 mile trip around the western states in her from Arizona up to Washington and around down thru Colorado back home. Along the trip we picked up the 1956 standard and towed her home from Oregon with the high roof. One year later on the way home front he VW Classic in 2003 she met her end in a bad accident. At 2am in the morning we were rear ended by a Semi on I-10, the buss was flipped onto her side and the 5 of us in it had to put forth some effort to escape from the burning vehicle and stay a safe distance from the flaming 18 wheeler.

Sold 1956 Standard Bus
Original Paint
I saw this bus originally in photos from the first Mt Shasta trip Mr Rustybus went on and the next year when I saw it in person I know she was worth saving. What a great bus to save, Thank you Christopher Moore. I have since sold the bus to a friend who got it running and registered in just a few months and drove it to the OCTO/VW Classic weekend in 2004

help it's got me 1958 Single Cab
I received a call at home one day from a guy who wanted to sell his single cab for a great price. I cruised on over and she was perfect. The most rust free bus that I own but being that she is a single cab I would not say dent free. This truck we well used, or you might say over used if you saw her bed but that's all good cause she is a great truck for hauling whatever around, that is what they are for isn't it. A good work truck is something that can always come in handy. Cool Fact, originally fire engine red

Under Construction 1965 SO-34
Velvet Green Westfalia
Frankenstein
The dream come true bus. So you see my favorite bus is my 1965 SO-44 above. Since owning the 44 I know my favorite bus color is velvet green and I love the blue white combo a 1965 color combo. And since owning this bus I have really learned to love the small uniqnesses of the 1965 production year buses. My panel was velvet green and I knew from that it was a perfect fit. So as mentioned above in the SO-34 story I saw one of these and knew I really wanted one but all I have is a huge project rusty bus in storage. So one day in the beginning of 2003 I saw a posting on the buskatiers list about the bus, and then another day. This awesome camper on www.thesamba.com and after a week of it not selling they mentioned it again. So I finally broke down and went and looked at it. I know I didn't need anther bus so at first I was hesitant to go look at the add and maybe I should have just not look but it was too late. It was all my favorite bus things and all that things that I wanted. Lets see, 1965, Velvet Green, SO-34. I e-mailed the owner and told him it was sold, but he kept telling me it was way rusty and wanted to send me more pictures. He just didn't understand I just wanted it for what it was and after many more pictures I told him it was still sold. Now on to the fun part I asked him if the engine turned over, I did not ask much more as I did not want to put him on the spot and I could see from the pictures it was all there. He said yes. So I bought 2 tickets on a Greyhound bus for my son and I one to arrive one week before the Vintage meet in Seattle to go out to Spokane Washington from Arizona. I packed 150 pounds of parts and tools into the 3 large bags and then we had 2 stuffed backpacks and a large canvas tool back I pretended was a purse but it was really full of all my tools. We arrived up there and I completely went thru the whole bus, brakes, electrical, got the engine running, bought new tires, new battery. Full tune up and believe it or not it took three day and I was on my way to western Washington. You see the bus sat in a field for 13 years before the guy I bought it from pulled it out and put it on the samba. I figured if I could not drive it home it was just simply cheep enough to grab another set of Greyhound tickets and head home. But as luck had it I took a huge chance that with little to no info on a bus purchased 2000 miles away and it all worked out. I drove the bus to the Vintage meet the next weekend and home thru Colorado to the Rocky Mountain Motorwork show and back to Arizona with no major problems. In the end the trip totaled 5000 miles on a bus that the previous week had just been sitting in a field for 13 years last time it was registered was 1990. I drove the bus for another year daily, 40 miles a day commute 5 days a week and out to Jerome in 2003. The motor finally died almost a year after I started her up due to a very bad oil leak, well you can hear the bearing is dead, she still turns over but not a good idea to drive any more till the rebuild. I love this bus. Oh yeah after a little more up close and personal inspection to her I found the whole front nose was replaced. And looking for a name for this bus that was brought back from the dead, had huge parts from others and looked like a big green monster, I named her Frankenstein affectionately.

Ice Cream 1964 High Roof
EIS Sales Flap
SO-02 Westfalia
In the end of 2002 I saw this bus on ebay and was the high bidder until it was mysteriously pulled. A friend also interested in the bus hunted down the real story behind and its final location. At Bad Camburg that nest year Mr Rustybus ventured over to Germany with our friend and we were lucky enough to bring it home as a souvenir. A few months later it arrived on a boat from overseas. It took about three weeks to get her running and took her to the VW Classic in 2004. Originally a Light Gray in color and repainted once. Then painted white twice and turned into the EIS ice cream bus. If you know any history about this bus I would love to know more.

Townign Tall 1962 Westfalia Trailer
A nice accessory for any high roof. My plan is to restore it and paint it to match the official PLF Highroof.
Sold 1965 Ghia
A good deal on a project car-Sold

The Thing 1974 Thing
I sold my 1956 bus to a friend and as a final payment I received her Thing. This is a sold car with very little rust. It came with both the soft top and fiberglass hard top, factory roll bar and spare tire mount too. Original color was white.

Westygon 1984 Westfalia Vanagon
As I added another member to the family I decided a A/C would be nice along with a little speed and a bed that was above my living area would all be handy for traveling all summer. I started looking for a Vanagon a year or so before stumbling on this great deal at the Jerome Jamboree in 2006. It was sitting along the main road with a for sale sign in the window. I sold enough T-shirts to buy the bus on the way out of town. It is a water pumper and has it's issues, one being it needs a new engine or at least a head gasket job. It is still on and off putting down the road, but need some more love. It is in great shape, a well loved vehicle. I hope to go on a long summer vacation in her one day.
